“…This technique provides the advantage of a uniform dispersion of coccoliths over the slide. Quantitative analyses were performed following the methodology described in Rio et al (1990), with a light microscope at ð1250 magnification and counting at least 300 specimens per sample. The area in which the analysis was performed (i.e.…”

“…In our record we detect the H. sellii FCO at the base of Chron C3Ar with an astronomical age of 6.968-6.964 Ma. The FO of this species is currently adopted to define the MNN 12=MNN 13 boundary in the Mediterranean zonal scheme of Rio et al (1990); we postulate that the Pliocene appearance marks a re-entry of this species after the ending of the Messinian salinity crisis in the Mediterranean. If the H. sellii FCO observed at Monte del Casino is confirmed in other Mediterranean sections, a redefinition of the Pliocene event as Paracme End will be necessary.…”

“…The reader is referred to and Perch-Nielsen (1985) for the taxonomy of the calcareous nannofossil species considered in this paper. Advantages and limits of the application of the data-collecting methods are discussed in Backman and Shackleton (1983) and Rio et al (1990b), to which the reader is referred as well.…”

“…A variable degree of dissolution of other elements of the nannofossil assemblage (i.e., helicoliths and placoliths) is observed in these layers. Discoasterids are known to be dissolution-resistant and their percentages may be used as an indicator of the dissolution intensity (see references in Rio et al, 1990b). The high-frequency variations in discoasterid abundances are therefore interpreted as a preservational signal.…”

“…Emiliania huxleyi appeared in the late Pleistocene becoming a major component of the coccolith assemblages from the base of the E. huxleyi Acme Zone, quantitatively defined and dated at 85 ka by Rio et al (1990), replacing Gephyrocapsa (Gartner, 1977;Thierstein et al, 1977;Rio et al, 1990;Raffi et al, 1993;Young, 1998). The dominance of E. huxleyi in the upper photic zone nannoflora of the Holocene and latest late Pleistocene is well documented both globally (e.g.…”
