Plug-and-Play and Network-Capable Medical Instrumentation and Database with a Complete Healthcare Technology Suite: MediCAN

Abstract: MediCAN™ represents a network architecture that was designed as a vendor-independent technology for interfacing bedside medical instrumentation. It is compatible with almost all medical instrument technologies and data communications protocols. In contrast to IEEE X73, MediCAN TM sought to integrate the most suitable off-the-shelf technologies that were already proven and up-to-date with cost-effective availability. MediCAN™ is highly scalable in regards to interfacing with instruments on the lowest end of com… Show more

“…MediCAN™ technology suite creates the interfacing hardware and related communication protocol in an open standard fashion for instruments to network in any healthcare environment. MediCAN™ system works towards a similar goal as ISO/IEEE 11073 [33,34,35] in being a candidate to become an open standard. MediCAN™ addresses communication services and protocol definitions based on Control Area Network (CAN) communication.…”

“…MediCAN is a solution proposed by McKneely et al [9] and is described as a vendor-independent network architecture for interfacing medical devices based on proprietary protocols that are built on top of UDP/TCP as well as CAN-Bus. There is no direct communication between the devices and the access to the closed network of medical devices is controlled by a proxy server.…”
