Plyometric Stair Jump and Reaction Box Jump to Improve the Frequency of Straight-forward Kicks in Pencak Silat Athletes

Abstract: Pencak Silat basic technique mastery, either in art or fighting criteria, must be supported by ultimate physical condition. Straight-forward kick is one of the attacking modes that would be effective if supported by good leg muscle power. The objective of the study was to describe the plyometric training effectiveness on the straight-forward kick frequency. It was quasi-experiment research in which the samples were 30 junior male athletes of Pencak Silat. The 10-second straight-forward kick speed test was util… Show more

“…Plyometric training produces significant improvements in physical and technical parameters in male players compared to regular handball practice [31]. It is hoped that future research will continue to explore the effects of plyometric training in both sexes at the adolescent stage which could provide more comprehensive guidance for training youth athletes [37] and that strength and conditioning coaches should consider the results of much research regarding this topic w hen designing training programs as the inclusion of plyometric training appears to be especially beneficial for improving performance [38] as these plyometric exercises are known to be effective for developing explosive strength and power in the lower extremities which can be beneficial for athletes in various sport disciplines [39]. These plyometric workouts should be under the supervision of an expert so that they can positively contribute to success [40].…”

“…Some studies have sought to evaluate the differences between plyometric training and traditional training and their effects on the muscle structure of the players with the sole purpose of looking for significant differences [36]. Plyometric training has also been em ployed by pencak silat athletes either in its artistic aspect or in combat tactics, since this discipline requires an excellent physical condition as a base [37]. Another style of martial arts that employs this type of training is Judo where some coaches have used physiological or inertial sensors to evaluate its effect on the performance of the practitioners [38].…”

“…Four types of kicks in pencak silat are often used: front, sickle, side, and back. The front kick is a kick that is difficult to stop, fend off, catch, and even slam because the square shape of the kick keeps the body standing upright by facing the opponent so that it will be more stable in maintaining balance (Sudiana et al, 2023).…”

“…The physical demands of Silat are multifaceted, requiring skill, agility, muscular power, and endurance. This dynamic and physically demanding art form is an excellent venue for investigating various aspects of athletic performance and biomechanics [4,5]. In a modern competition format, Silat can further break down into two main categories Silat Olahraga (fighting-based) and Silat Seni (art-based).…”
