Pneumatization and extensions of the sphenoid sinus: a CT overlook

Abstract: The sphenoid bone has a specific development during fetal life, until it reaches its complete dimensions. The sphenoid cavities are usually undeveloped at birth and they reach their full volume only after puberty. Pneumatization of the sphenoid sinus is unpredictable and different for each person. The authors do not intend to develop a literature review or to compare their experience with data already published. The paper is not an original imagistic study of the authors, it only represents a short communicatio… Show more

“…Степень пневматизации клиновидной пазухи варьирует у разных индивидуумов [10], включая отсутствие воздухоносных полостей в теле кости или их гипоплазию. Хотя такие индивидуальные варианты пневматизации у взрослых людей встречаются относительно редко [11].…”

“…Sellar pneumatization is the most common type in which the pneumatization surpasses the tuberculum sella and can extend as far as the clivus and can be divided in incomplete (Figure 6 -A) and complete sellar pneumatization (Figure 6 -B) in relation with the posterior wall of the sella turcica. Excessive pneumatization of the sphenoid sinus determines thinning of the sphenoid bone and exposure of critical anatomical landmarks (internal carotid artery, optical nerve) making preoperative assessment of the sphenoid sinus anatomy mandatory 3,17 .…”
