“…These results agree with Osorio et al (2003), who found small growth differences for taro (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott) when N was supplied at low concentrations with either NO − 3 -N or NH + 4 -N. The relatively high percentage of NH + 4 -N in the nutrient solution enhanced growth, which is consistent with previous research on some other crops such as foliage plants, rice (Oryza sativa L.), cotoneaster, rudbeckia, and purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) (Conover and Poole, 1986;Kronzucker et al, 1999;Kraus and Warren, 2002;Palaniswamy et al, 2002). However, our results were the opposite of those found for New Guinea impatiens (Weigle et al, 1982;Cox and Seeley, 1984;Scoggins and Mills, 1998). Nitrogen is a critical nutrient in the formation and development of the plant photosynthetic apparatus, and deficiencies or excesses that retard photosynthesis also affect plant growth.…”
