Point-of-care testing of cholesterol and triglycerides for epidemiologic studies: evaluation of the multicare-in system

Abstract: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world with 80% of cardiovascular events that occur in low-and middle-income countries. Reliable data on the prevalence of risk factors in developing countries can be obtained in doorto-door epidemiologic studies with the use of automatic instruments. This study was performed to assess the sensitivity and specificity of a low-cost and manageable point-of-care testing (POCT) instrument (HPS MultiCare-in, Italy) for cholesterol and triglyceride assays. P… Show more

“…The mean of the last two measurements was used for the analysis. As recommended for developing countries, fasting blood glucose (FBG, mg/dL) and TC (mg/dL) were measured from early-morning capillary blood samples,12 13 after an overnight fast. The samples were obtained and analysed at home using a calibrated Accutrend Plus GCTL analyser (Roche Diagnostics, Germany).…”

“…Some of the small POCT cholesterol systems include Accutrend Plus (Roche Diagnostics), CardioChek PA (PTS Diagnostics, Indianapolis, IN), and MultiCare-in (BSI, Arezzo, Italy). 147 MultiCare systems are pocket-sized reflectance photometers in which the color intensity from a chromogen reaction is proportional to the concentration of cholesterol or triglycerides in blood. A drop of capillary blood is applied to the test strip to obtain results for cholesterol and triglyceride assays.…”

“…Creatinine, a byproduct of kidney function and a breakdown product of creatine phosphate in muscle, is produced at a constant rate in healthy individuals. Measuring serum creatinine is a simple test and is the most commonly used indicator of renal function through estimation of the glomerular filtration rate [258].…”
