Point-of-Use Sweat Biosensor to Track the Endocrine–Inflammation Relationship for Chronic Disease Monitoring

Abstract: Aim: The hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis is involved in maintaining homeostasis by engaging with the parasympathetic nervous system. During the process of disease affliction, this relationship is disturbed and there is an imbalance driven response observed. Materials & methods: By monitoring the two key components involved in these pathways, cortisol and TNF-α, the manifestations of chronic stress on the body’s homeostasis can be evaluated in a comprehensive manner. This work highlights the development… Show more

“…This reaction ensures the chemisorptive anchoring of the antibody on the sensing surface. From the FTIR spectrum, antibody immobilization is evident from the peaks between the 1600–1655 cm –1 range for the amide I bond and the 1500–1580 cm –1 for the amide II bond. , These peaks are contributed by the secondary structure of the protein molecule, that is, antibody. Also, the appearance of the CNC stretch of the aliphatic amines in the range between 1000 and 1200 cm –1 highlights the successful conjugation between the thiol linker and the antibody.…”

“…Smart Skin describes specific sensors worn directly on the skin, which can measure a wide range of parameters. From physical quantities (e.g., pressure, temperature, or humidity) to chemical parameters such as biomarkers in human fluids there are no limits [132,133]. Additionally, for biomarkers and factors associated with QoL impairment in PSO and AD this technique could be useful in future.…”

“…Although the response depicted is a cumulative change, the spike and fall can be easily seen by performing slope extraction, as shown in the paper. Similarly, another paper by our group 43 investigates the sensitivity of a multibiomarker detection platform over the periods of 1 and 5.5 h continuously. Over the period of 1 h, rise and fall in cortisol levels is investigated with concentrations going from 1 to 100 ng/mL and back down to 10 ng/mL.…”
