Polarization-maintaining fiber-optic-grating vector vibroscope

Abstract: A fiber-optic vector vibroscope based on orthogonal polarization cladding-to-core recoupling is demonstrated. A compact structure in which a short section of polarization-maintained (PM) fiber stub containing a straight fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is spliced to another single-mode fiber. Two well-defined orthogonally polarized cladding modes reflected by the PM-FBG are recoupled at the junction and the coupling intensity shows an extremely high sensitivity to bending in the corresponding orthogonal directions. “…The grating tilt breaks the cylindrical symmetry of the fiber and launches linearly polarized light into the fiber cladding at orthogonal orientations relative to the tilt plane, allowing for vectorial vibration information to be retrieved. Alternatively, gratings written in polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) [112,113] have been shown to function as 2D vibration sensors. The cladding modes are divided into two polarization states which show orthogonal responses to vibrations aligned with the fiber’s X- and Y- polarization directions.…”

“…[13,14] To develop vector accelerometers with small dimensions, different types of fiber optic gratings have been used to make accelerometers, such as cladding fiber gratings, [15] tilted fiber gratings, [16] and eccentric fiber gratings. [17] These methods take advantage of the sensitivity of the cladding mode to the direction of vibration, where the refractive index is changed, to accomplish vector vibration sensing. These sensors are small in size and high in accuracy, unfortunately, they exhibit susceptibility to the refractive index of the surrounding medium and possess demanding packaging requirements.…”

“…For instance, the polarization dependence of cladding modes responds readily to the vector physical parameter that involves magnitude and direction. Two orthogonal polarizations of cladding modes respond to both orientation and amplitude of these applied vector parameters, such as FBG written in the polarization-maintained fiber for vibration [23], TFBG with excessive angle of 81 • for twist [24,25], re-grown TFBG with split cladding mode for bending [26], and TFBG with metallic oxide coating for twist [27]. In these studies, the researchers fully utilize the strain response difference of two orthogonal polarized resonances (including p-and s-polarization) to achieve vector measurements.…”
