Police Recognition of the Links between Spouse Abuse and Child Abuse

Abstract: This study investigated the links between referrals to police child protection units (CPUs) and domestic violence units (DVUs) during November 1994 in one police force in an urban area of England. DVU files and CPU files were analyzed and cross-referenced by investigating types, severity, and frequency of abuse; and a number of background factors. The rate of overlap (families with files at both units) was 21.6%, although 46.3% of child protection files indicated the presence of domestic violence in the family… Show more

“…Researchers have unwittingly discovered potential behavioural variables that discriminate between types of family dyads. Browne and Hamilton (1999) in an examination of the links between child and spouse abuse, reported that those cases with an overlap of both child and spouse abuse in one household displayed greater severity of domestic violence. Therefore, it is plausible that the type of offender who abuses both spouse and children is more severe in his violent actions than those offending solely against their partner.…”

“…As Osofsky (2003) states "the necessary integration of this perspective into the work of law enforcement, the judicial system and social service providers has not yet occurred" (p161). Indeed, research examining police recognition of the links between spouse and child abuse demonstrated a lack of referral between Child Protection Units and Domestic Violent Units (Browne & Hamilton, 1999), highlighting a partnership gap. The Police are in a position to aid the prevention and intervention of child maltreatment by providing child protection professionals with information on the criminal background of a parent who has aggressed against their intimate partner.…”

“…Indeed, some professionals have judged families with co-occuring child and partner abuse to be a higher risk to children, in terms of injury severity and are thus deemed to be more in need of services (Beeman et al, 2001;Browne & Hamilton, 1999).…”

“…Freqüentemente situações de agressão conjugal (violência doméstica contra a mulher) estão associadas aos maus-tratos contra a criança (Browne & Hamilton, 1999;Kerig & Fedorowicz, 1999;Machado, 1996;McCaghy, 1985;Shipman, Rossman & West, 1999).…”
