Policy brief on climate change and mental health/well-being

Abstract: Climate change has a significant global impact on individuals’ mental health and well-being. However, global health systems are inadequately prepared to address this issue. Studies indicate that climate events such as floods, droughts, tornados, earthquakes, and fires not only exacerbate chronic mental illness, but also impact well-being causing anxiety, stress, and in the worst case, suicide. “…Future work should investigate more systematically the possible effectiveness, scalability, and cost-effectiveness of interventions and policies aimed at safeguarding mental health in the face of climate change, including non-mental health interventions. Various health professionals, including nurses [ 108 ], emergency department clinicians [ 109 , 110 ], clinical psychologists, and psychiatrists [ 111 , 112 ], have already outlined ways to address mental health problems related to climate change within clinical practice and broader policy, highlighting the strong willingness to act in the medical community. There is also a growing movement of climate advocacy in the health sector, recognising the responsibility to protect the health of current and future generations and calling for meaningful government action [ 113 ].…”

“…For every standard deviation of increased temperature or extreme rainfall, a 4% to 14% increase in conflict (Hsiang et al, 2013), violence and shootings (Anderson, 2001;Towers et al, 2018) have been recorded. The impact of extreme weather on post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicides is well-documented (Burke et al, 2018;Clayton, 2020;Hayes et al, 2018;Lai et al, 2015;Liu et al, 2020;Manning & Clayton, 2018), and climate anxiety is growing (Clayton, 2020).…”
