Various international and national social work ethical principles call social workers to participate in politics, yet not much research exists in the field of a political social work. Little is known about the actual voluntary political engagement of social workers as well as factors influencing their political activity. Especially, few studies with an international comparison focus have been conducted. Consequently, this study used cross sectional survey design to better understand the factors influencing the political activity of social workers in Switzerland (n = 1242) and in the United States (n = 3033). The results indicate that the political activity of social workers is strongly associated with the political influence of parents, with membership in a professional social work association as well as with political efficacy. There are some differences between Swiss and US social workers, mainly concerning the influence of memberships in trade unions. As one of few international practice comparison pieces, this article aims to further stimulate the discourse on social workers' political activity. For this purpose, implications for social work education, practice, and research are outlined in the final section.

Zusammenfassung: Bis heute existiert kein geteiltes Verständnis von Wirkung im Sozial wesen. Vertiefte Kenntnisse sind hilfreich, um die kontroverse und unübersichtliche Wir kungsdebatte zu konsolidieren und ergebnisorientiert führen zu können. Der Bei trag rekonstruiert auf der Grundlage einer Literaturanalyse die Deutungen von Wirkung in vier ausgewählten Handlungsfeldern des Sozialwesens im deutschsprachigen Raum (Jus tizvollzug, Fremdplatzierung, Entlastung pflegender Angehöriger, Kurzberatung). Er verdeutlicht, dass sich die Deutungen von Wirkung an den Klient:innen und gelin genden Interventionen orientieren. Eine auffallende «Ökonomisierung» der Wirkungs debatte bestätigt sich in der Analyse nicht. Schlüsselwörter: Wirkung, Wirkungsorientierung, Wirkungsdimensionen, Wirkfaktoren, So zial wesen Interpretations of impact in social services: Approaches to a fuzzy concept Summary: To date, there is no shared understanding of impact in the social services. Indepth knowledge is helpful to consolidate the controversial and confusing impact de bate and to be able to lead it in a resultoriented way. Based on a literature analysis, this article reconstructs the interpretations of impact in four selected fields of action in the social service sector in Germanspeaking countries (correctional services, outofhome placement, relief for caring relatives, brief counselling). It shows that the interpretations of impact are oriented towards clients and successful interventions. A striking "marketi zation" («Ökonomisierung») of the impact debate is not confirmed in the analysis.

Strategies of Social Workers’ Policy Engagement—a Qualitative Analysis Among Swiss Social Workers Holding Elected Office

While ethical documents all around the globe call upon social workers to actively participate in policymaking processes, there is little evidence of their actual engagement in this type of practice. In particular, the fact that social workers also engage in party-politics by running for or holding elected office has been neglected in most of the existing research. Therefore, this article focuses on this very specific route of policy engagement by examining strategies for influencing policymaking processes used by Swiss social workers holding political office. To do so, 31 social workers holding elected office in the German-speaking part of Switzerland were invited to write a book chapter in an edited volume. The authors were explicitly asked to describe in detail their strategies and methods for influencing policymaking processes, and to place social work issues on the political agenda. Based on a qualitative content analysis of the book chapters, the following strategies were identified: (1) bringing social work’s professional expertise into policymaking processes, (2) doing good and talking about it, (3) presenting facts and figures, (4) organizing the profession, (5) networking, and (6) “normalizing” policy engagement in social work. The findings suggest that political content should be strengthened in social work education and further promoted by professional associations. This would empower more social workers to run for political office and enable them to contribute their specific skills, knowledge, and expertise to policymaking processes.
