Poly[ethylene‐co‐(vinyl alcohol)]‐graft‐Poly(ε‐caprolactone) by Reactive Extrusion, 2 – Parameter Analysis

Abstract: EVOH‐g‐PCL were prepared by a solvent‐free reactive extrusion process using a co‐rotating twin screw extruder. Kinetic simulations were made of selected reaction conditions at 185 °C. Changes in the screw rotation rate resulted in evolution of the residence time distribution and slightly changed the monomer conversion. An increase of the [OH]0/[Cl]0 ratio made the reactive system more viscous and decreased the overall pumping capacities of the extruder. Increase of the mean residence time, combined with a posi… Show more

“…[5] The first one is the addition of a graft or block copolymer. [6][7][8][9][10][11][12] To form a graft copolymer, two strategies exist, the grafting from between polymers [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21] and the grafting onto, [22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29] with a polymer bearing an initiating function previously induced by ozonolysis or irradiation. [30,31] A coupling reaction through a function can also be used to generate specific functions onto a polymer chain moiety to then start a grafting from or a grafting onto.…”

“…Different copolymers were obtained which had interesting elastomeric and adhesion properties. Nevertheless, even if ε-caprolactone conversion can be almost total, some caprolactone residuals can subsist [22,23]. In other studies, and to avoid CL presence in the obtained materials, PCL was grafted onto EVOH [24].…”

“…Numerical simulations have been devoted to reactive extrusion processes for quantitatively analyzing the reaction trend and optimizing the processing conditions . Such simulations have been performed by Motha and Seppala for the grafting of carboxylic acids and silanes to ethylene polymers, Hojabr et al for the grafting of GMA onto PE, Fukuoka for the grafting between PE and vinylsilane, Keum and White, Zhu et al, and Aguiar et al for the grafting of maleic anhydride on PP, and Zhao et al for poly[ethylene‐ co ‐(vinyl alcohol)]‐graft‐poly(Ε‐caprolactone) . With accurate numerical models, evolutions of key variables such as monomer conversion, grafting degree and fluid viscosity can be quantitatively predicted.…”
