Poly (N-Isopropylacrylamide) Microgels for Organic Dye Removal from Water

Abstract: The ability of poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAm), and pNIPAm-co-acrylic acid (pNIPAm-co-AAc) microgels to remove an organic azo dye molecule, 4-(2-Hydroxy-1-naphthylazo) benzenesulfonic acid sodium salt (Orange II) from aqueous solutions at both room and elevated temperature was assessed. At room temperature, we found that the amount of Orange II removed from water (removal efficiency) increased with increasing AAc and microgel concentration. The removal of Orange II from water was also fit by a Langmuir s… Show more

“…A maximum of 0.95 g Orange II/g microgels was sorbed in the case of pNIPAm-co-AAc-1, with an R 2 value of 0.9714, whereas with an R 2 value of 0.9923, the maximum Orange II sorbed on the microgels was determined to be 1.1 g Orange II/g microgel in the case of pNIPAm-co-AAc-3. These studies combined with our previous [68,69] reports will serve as a basis for our future studies to employ these systems to remediate water contaminated with compounds like naphthenic acids, PAHs, PCBs, drug molecules, etc. that pose a threat to human and aquatic life.…”

“…Many natural compounds or macromolecules have been adopted to form chiral recognizable sites, such as amino acids [10] , cholesterols [11] , peptides [12,13] , sugars [14][15][16] , and celluloses [17] derivatives. Among them, L-amino acids and their derivatives are widely used because of their diversified structures, low costs, comprehensive applicability and feasibility [18,19] . Microgels based on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), a classic thermosensitive material, have attracted a lot of attentions due to their great potential in numerous applications, e.g., tissue engineering, drug delivery and bionanotechnology [20,21] .…”
