Poly(p‐phenylene sulfide) nanofibers prepared by CO2 laser supersonic drawing

Abstract: Poly(p‐phenylene sulfide) (PPS) nanofibers are prepared by irradiating a PPS fiber with a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser while drawing it at supersonic speeds. A supersonic jet is generated by blowing air into a vacuum chamber through the fiber injection orifice. Nanofibers obtained at a laser power of 30 W and chamber pressure of 10 kPa exhibit an average diameter of 600 nm and a draw ratio of 110,000. Scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction analyses are e… Show more

“…The orientation of the crystalline phase of PPS nanofibers after heating at 220°C for 15 min inside the two hot aluminum plates with a high compression was also investigated by the wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs. The increase of the intensity of the broad 111/200 WAXD diffraction peak and the decrease of the distribution of fiber diameters indicated that the higher orientation was formed with lower p ch 6 . Although the information about crystallinity and orientation has been investigated for both pristine PPS nanofibers and PPS nanofibers after heating at very high temperature, the growth and the packing processes for the crystalline phase during annealing at relatively low temperature are still indefinite.…”

“…CLSD employs only CO 2 laser irradiation and does not require additional processes or solvents, unlike electrospinning, which requires a solvent, or sea-island-type conjugated melt spinning that requires the removal of a second component. CLSD has already been applied to prepare NFs of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) [24], poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) [25], poly(ethylene-2,6-naphthalate) [26], poly(glycolic acid) (PGA) [27], ethylene tetrafluoroethylene copolymer [28], nylon 66 [29], and poly(phenylene sulfide) [30].…”
