Poly(lactic acid) composite films reinforced with microcrystalline cellulose and keratin from chicken feather fiber in 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium chloride

Abstract: Amphiphilic keratin from chicken feather fiber (CFF) and hydrophilic cellulose were incorporated as fillers into hydrophobic poly(lactic acid) (PLA) polymer blend. This study implemented ionic liquid (IL) of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMIMCl) to dissolve the 1 wt % fillers. The composite films were compared with and without the addition of IL prepared from five sets of ratios of CFF to MCC using measuring mixers and compression molding. Thermal analysis showed that increase in CFF composition decrea… Show more

“…It is hypothesized that the chloride in [Bmim]Cl has a major impact on the dissociation of hydrogen bonds in cellulose. Nevertheless, [Bmim]Cl is very poisonous and crystallizes at ambient temperature (Khaw et al, 2019). Alternately, 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([Bmim][OAc]) has been deemed beneficial in lignocellulosic biomass swelling, and its lignin solubility is not as impacted by water as [Bmim]Cl's (Gogoi and Hazarika, 2019).…”

“…The neat PLA had the highest thermal stability with T onset 331 C (Table 5) which may be due to the formation of oligomers or cyclic oligomers. 46…”

“…Firstly, this might be related with the number of microvoids on the surface of the composites which would facilitate the water transfer [48][49][50], as verified by the SEM graphs. Next, the interactions between lipid phase and biopolymer chains in o/w emulsion films might just increase the external tortuousness and take negligible effect on the moisture barrier of emulsified films [51][52][53][54].…”
