Poly(vinyl alcohol)/Carboxyl Graphene Membranes for Ethanol Dehydration by Pervaporation

Abstract: Carboxyl graphene (CG) with two functions of hybridization and crosslinking was incorporated into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix to form PVA/CG mixed‐matrix membranes (MMMs). The membranes demonstrated excellent mechanical properties and thermal stability. The improved hydrophilicity and formed crosslinking structure led to moderate swelling. The membrane crystallinity decreased and the free volume was promoted with increasing CG loading amount. The pervaporation (PV) separation performance for ethanol dehyd… Show more

“…The high mesoporous ratio of MWSC facilitates the formation of capillary condensation, enabling multilayer adsorption of an adsorbent. D ap defines the ability of adsorbed molecules to permeate within the biochar [ 24 ]. For adsorbed molecules to permeate the adsorbent, the pore diameter must have a larger effective molecular diameter than the adsorbate.…”

“…The fabrication of the PES/GNPs‐O membrane could be done by simple phase inversion method through immersion precipitation route making this method the most widely used for commercial membrane fabrication today. For instance, studies of the application of this membrane type have been conducted in water treatment , ethanol dehydration , or gas separation . However, understanding the properties and characters would promote the decision for its technological application in order to obtain an effective and efficient process.…”

“…The increment in crosslinking was also observed in the ATR results. Meanwhile, the esterification reaction between hydroxyl groups of PVA chains and the oxygen functional groups including carboxyl groups in GO and formation of a crosslinked structure was reported in literature (Han et al, 2020). However, these effects are compensated to some extents for water permeation by hydrophilicity of the nanosheets and as a result the water permeation flux has less decrement than the IPA flux in the filled membrane.…”
