Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) stabilized aluminum nanoparticles obtained by the reaction of SiCl4 with LiAlH4

Abstract: Isolation and stabilization of Al nanoparticles has been possible by the room temperature reaction between SiCl 4 and LiAlH 4 in the presence of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) under sonication. The present investigation explained that the Al from LiAlH 4 produced Al nanoparticles while SiCl 4 was converted to hydrosilanes. The formation of Al nanoparticles from this reaction was established by thorough characterization using PXRD patterns, 27 Al MAS-NMR spectra and HRTEM micrographs. The isolation of Al nanopart… Show more

“…These diffraction peaks are indexed as orthorhombic phase of boehmite AlOOH (JCPDS number 00-021-1307) for 2θ = 39.3 and 65.8°, as cubic γ-Al 2 O 3 (JCPDS number 00-001-1303) for 2θ = 45.5° and as face centered cubic aluminum (JCPDS number 004-0787) for 2θ = 65.8 and 78.8°. On comparison with diffraction peaks of metallic aluminum, peaks at 2θ = 39.3, 45.5, 65.8, 78.8 and 83.1° match well (JCPDS number 89-4037) [63,64,65,66,67].…”

“…However, it is also possible that increasing gallium nitrate concentration also contributes to the viscosity increase through chelation between gallium ions and the carbonyl-nitrogen resonance structure in polyvinylpyrrolidone. 46 49 The surface tension was not significantly affected by the gallium nitrate concentration. The one exception was with 15 wt % gallium nitrate, but this was most likely due to the high viscosity of the solution interfering with the measurement.…”

“…The dipole may have arisen from a weak coordinative interaction between the C-N group of PVP and the metal and/or hydrogen bonding from C = O to the oxidized surface of the metal. 37,38 The surface WF changes of various materials show that the presence of polar species is key to producing a dipole at the organic/metal interface. Moreover, the dipole direction can be adjusted by changing the polar species.…”
