Polycaprolactone/chlorinated bioglass scaffolds doped with Mg and Li ions: Morphological, physicochemical, and biological analysis

Abstract: The objective was to synthesize and characterize fine polycaprolactone (PCL) fibers associated with a new 58S bioglass obtained by the precipitated sol-gel route, produced by the electrospinning process in order to incorporate therapeutic ions (Mg and Li). In PCL/acetone solutions were added 7% pure bioglass, bioglass doped with Mg(NO 3 ) 2 and Li 2 CO 3 and were subjected to electrospinning process. The fibers obtained were characterized morphologically, chemically and biologically. The results

“…This observation indicated a notable impact of the incorporation of BG on the fiber size. SEM images (Figure 3B) further support these findings, indicating the influence of bioglass on fiber structure, which is in agreement with the study conducted by Kukulka et al 41 This could potentially lead to increased surface area for cell attachment and proliferation. SEM images (Figure 3B) further support these findings, indicating the influence of bioglass on fiber structure.…”

“…Sodium metasilicate (0.65 mol/L) underwent ion exchange resin treatment to form silicic acid (Si[OH] 4 ), serving as the silica precursor. 14,[19][20][21][22][23] In the production of 45S5 bioglass, Si(OH) 4 was blended with calcium chloride hydrate (CaCl 2 ), ammonium phosphate monobasic (NH 4 H 2 PO 4 ), and sodium chloride (NaCl). The resulting solution was subjected to drying at 100 C for 24 h, followed by freezing and subsequent freeze-drying for 72 h. Following the lyophilization process, the sample was calcined at 600 C for 5 h, resulting in the formation of a calcined and lyophilized silicate chlorinated BG.…”

“…The dispersion utilized for the electrospinning consisted of 11% PCL dissolved in acetone (w/v) and 13.5% of bioceramic. The components were mixed at a constant rotation of 300 rpm 16 on a shaker (Solab, SP, Brazil) until the total dissolution of the polymer. Thus, three solutions were obtained: PCL (control), PCL/N600, and PCL/CL600.…”

“…BG has been combined with many different materials, for example, various hydrogels [ 8 ] , graphene oxide [ 9 ] , or polycaprolactone [ 10 ] , from which it is released and induces osteogenic properties [ 11 ] . By combining PLA and bioglass, it might be possible to combine the positive characteristics of these materials and overcome their negative aspects.…”
