Polycentric development and local fertility in metropolitan regions: An empirical analysis for Barcelona, Spain

Abstract: The present study verifies if spatial variability in local fertility reflects the shift from a monocentric dense settlement model towards a polycentric metropolis organised in central cores and subcentral locations. The spatial distribution of a crude birth rate in Barcelona's province was investigated for a long time span (1975–2018), identifying distinctive trends within five concentric rings around Barcelona at four subperiods (1975–1985, 1986–1996, 1997–2007 and 2008–2018). Using multivariate exploratory s… Show more

“…In line with the working hypothesis of this study, the shift from a socio-spatial polarization in high-income central districts and low-income rural areas - typical of urbanization - to a more evident divide in medium-low income urban neighbourhoods and medium-high income peri-urban areas - characteristic of suburbanization – reflect the stratification of different social forces in Athens (Couch et al 2007 ). These dynamics were already observed in other Mediterranean regions (Degen and García 2012 ; Kandylis et al 2012 ; Salvati 2014 ; López-Gay and Salvati 2021 ).…”

“…Being a specific trait of 'urban sprawl' in the study area-and likely in other metropolises of the Northern Mediterranean basin-such dynamics require a comprehensive interpretation of short-term development paths based on more effective integration of morphological (e.g., land-use) and functional (e.g., socioeconomic) indicators [103][104][105]. Assumed to exert an influential effect on both central cities, suburban locations, and rural districts [106][107][108], such dynamics should be governed with a truly holistic spatial perspective [109], regulating the latent interaction between land-use patterns, agglomeration forces, and socio-demographic trends [110][111][112].…”
