“…When compared with some regions in the world, the concentrations of S6PCB in soil samples from Hanoi (< 0.02-39.98 ng g -1 , Table 1) are comparable to those in soil samples of the Moscow region (2.0-34 ng g -1 ), but higher than in the mineral topsoil of mainly rural areas of the United Kingdom and Switzerland (3.5-17 ng g -1 ) and in remote areas of Germany (0.9-4.8 ng g -1 ) (Alcock et al 1993;Wilcke et al 2006). The comparison of SPCB concentrations with those described in other studies was not possible due to the difference in the PCB standards used for quantification.…”

“…Moreover, it was found that PCBs in town A were much higher than those in Dalian (1.34 μg/kg) and Hong Kong (2.45 μg/kg) and background values of China (0.52 μg/kg; Zhang et al 2007;Ren et al 2007;. Compared with the PCBs results in agricultural areas from other countries, it could be found that PCBs in town A were also higher than those in Moscow (13.9 μg/kg), Briton (5.03 μg/kg), and global background values (5.4 μg/kg; Meijer et al 2003;Heywood et al 2006;Wilcke et al 2006). Since the numbers of PCB congeners determined and the sampling times among these studies were different, the comparison of PCBs pollution was not straight forward.…”

“…Among the various reactive soil constituents, SOM was generally considered to have a large absorption capacity towards heavy metals and organic compounds, thus serving as a huge sink hole and limiting the availability of these contaminants in soil environments (Yin et al 2002;Nemeth-Konda et al 2002). Therefore, a remarkable correlation could be found between SOM and contaminants (Meijer et al 2003;Wilcke et al 2006). A positive relationship between SOM and PCBs might be consistent with the concept of PCB "hopping," whereby repeated processes of volatilization and deposition lead to the accumulation of PCBs in soil with a high SOM content (Gouin et al 2004;Heywood et al 2006).…”
