“…The concentrations of PCDD/Fs in Xijiang (a tributary of the Pearl River; Fig. S1) were 20.4e76.2 pg/L with I-TEQ in the range of 0.012e0.075 pg/L (Liu et al, 2008), which were greater than those in the Elbe River, Germany (0.12e0.28 pg/L) (Götz et al, 1994) and the Hudson River, USA (2.35 pg/L) (Lohmann et al, 2000) but lower than those detected in Matsuyama's (Japan) river (nde1500 pg/L) (Seike et al, 1998).…”

“…are situated close to these rivers, resulting in the release of PBDEs, PCBs and PCDD/Fs into the aqueous system. Some regional studies have revealed the POPs pollution in the aquatic systems around China, including water (Guan et al, 2007;Liu et al, 2008), fish (Han et al, 2007;Wei et al, 2011), sediment (Chen et al, 2006;Li et al, 2014;Shen et al, 2006;Sun et al, 2005), etc. The results suggested occurrence of bioaccumulation and biomagnification of POPs in aquatic biotas, which may threaten human health, especially for the local inhabitants.…”

“…In a previously published paper (Li et al, 2011), the suspended particle concentration in Dongting Lake was found to be 141.08 ± 31.46 mg L À1 , and the average water temperature during the sampling period was found to be 10.1°C. Liu et al (2008) determined PCDD/F concentrations in water, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and water + SPM samples from the Xijiang River, and they calculated the water/water + SPM concentration ratios for different PCDD/F congeners and homolog groups. We can roughly estimate the ratios of PCDD/F concentrations in the water to suspended particles were 3.9-65.4% in the water samples of this study.…”

“…Bao et al (1995) reported that OCDD contributed 76% to the Liu et al (2008) reported that OCDD was the predominant congener and that RPCDD concentrations were higher than RPCDF concentrations in water from the Xijiang River, China. OCDD, HpCDD, and OCDF have been found to be the main PCDD/F homologs in sediments from the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers (Hui et al, 2009).…”
