Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans and polychlorinated biphenyls in sediments and aquatic organisms from the Taihu Lake, China

Abstract: Sediments at 16 sites and muscles of four aquatic species collected in Taihu Lake were analyzed for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) by HRGC/HRMS. The concentrations of total PCDD/Fs, PCBs and WHO-TEQ were 120.1-1315.1 pg/g dw, 889.7-29747.8 pg/g dw, and 0.83-17.72 pg TEQ/g dw, respectively in sediments; and those in muscles were 5.49-35.84 pg/g ww, 1517.10-27647.98 pg/g ww, and 0.52-3.83 pg TEQ/g ww respectively. The concentrations of PCDD/Fs and … Show more

“…The profile of PCDD/Fs in Haihe River, Dagu Drainage River and two other rivers in Tianjin is in accord with the profiles reported in other sediments of rivers (Eljarrat et al, 2005;Hu et al, 2005;Zhang and Jiang, 2005). Percentage contributions of OCDD, HpCDD and OCDF to the total-PCDD/Fs were shown in Fig.…”

“…Extensive studies have disclosed a serious deterioration of water quality due to pollutants derived from household, industrial, and agricultural discharge, and several kinds of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have been detected in air, water, sediment, and even biota in the region. Among the POPs detected are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), PBDEs, 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane, decabromodiphenylethane, dechlorane plus (DP), and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) [30][31][32][33]35]. Until now, there has been no information about the pollution status of OPs in this region.…”

“…Detailed analytical procedure can be found in our previous studies. 24 An Agilent 6890 gas chromatograph (GC) coupled with a Micromass Autospec Ultima high-resolution mass spectrometer (HRMS) was used for instrumental analysis. The HRMS was operated in the electron impact ionization mode at resolution of R g 10 000.…”
