Polychromatic X-ray in-line phase-contrast tomography for soft tissue

Abstract: An in-line phase-contrast computed tomography algorithm is proposed for the reconstruction of the three-dimensional distribution of the electron density of a weak absorption sample using micro-focus X-ray source. It exploits the natural combination of Feldkamp-Davis-Kress (FDK) cone-beam reconstruction algorithm with a phase retrieval algorithm based on a modified phase-attenuation duality. The effects of the coherence of X-rays and the revolution of the detector are also incorporated into this algorithm. Then… Show more

“…One way is to reduce the size of the focal spot in the x-ray tube such that a high coherence is achieved. These kinds of devices are called microfocus tubes and first results are described in [13,30]. The second method is based on conventional x-ray tubes that are modified by special gratings.…”

“…In addition, in-line PC-CT is a useful imaging technique due to its relatively simple set up. It does not require any crystals or additional equipment besides a high-intensity high-energy monochromatic beam and a detector (Guo et al, 2012).…”

“…One of the single distance phase retrieval methods which is based on the phase attenuation duality principle (PAD), is well suited for clinical imaging 24–26 . The PAD‐based method has been applied in various studies to generate and evaluate phase sensitive images 27–33 . The details of the PAD‐based retrieval method can be found in the (SI).…”
