Polyculture of Freshwater AngelfishPterophyllum scalareand Pacific white shrimpLitopenaeus vannameiin low-salinity water

Abstract: In this study, we evaluated the production potential of the polyculture of Freshwater Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare, Cichlidae) and Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). Two experimental trials were set up. The first trial entailed the use of a randomized design to investigate three treatments options: angelfish monoculture, shrimp monoculture, and fish and shrimp polyculture in 12 experimental 15 m2 ponds. In the second trial, we investigated two treatments (polyculture of caged fish and uncaged fish… Show more

“…The bulk of studies indicate that polyculture systems can influence the growth and yield of aquatic organisms (Fitzsimmons & Shahkar, 2017; Juárez‐Rosales et al, 2019; Ribeiro et al, 2012; Yuvaraj et al, 2009). The co‐culture ponds of shrimp and tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus ) displayed higher biomass of the shrimp than those of the shrimp monoculture (Juárez‐Rosales et al, 2019).…”

“…Buschmann, Troell, Kautsky and Kautsky () demonstrated the high profitability of seaweed and salmon integrated aquaculture on a land‐based farm in Chile, considering the internalization of the total environmental costs reduced by Gracilaria chilensis (additional total revenue of over US$ 60 000.00). Ribeiro, Diógenes, Cacho, Carvalho and Fernandes () demonstrated in experimental ponds that the polyculture of the marine shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei and the freshwater angelfish Pterophyllum scalare in low‐salinity water is more profitable than shrimp monoculture; a farm of 1 ha may achieve a profit of US$ 1825.62 per year, whereas monoculture of L. vannamei yields only US$ 837.39. Simulations of a polyculture of Nile tilapia and Australian redclaw crayfish showed a notable improvement in profitability when farms adopted the polyculture strategy, particularly over the 5‐year life of the project (Ponce‐Marbán, Hernández & Gasca‐Leyva ).…”
