Polycystic Ovary Syndrome in Asian Women

Abstract: There is substantial heterogeneity of symptoms and signs among women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In addition to different diagnostic criteria used, the ethnic background of women with PCOS may affect the clinical, hormonal, and metabolic characteristics of this condition. We present here studies related to the clinical, hormonal, and metabolic characteristics and response to the treatment of PCOS in Asia, which may be different from those in Western countries. It is important to take into considerat… Show more

“…In the present study abnormal fat distribution, and fat percentage, and biomarkers of dysglycemia and dyslipidemia were more remarkable in African descendants PCOS. From the metabolic perspective, but not included in the present study, Japanese women with PCOS seem less obese and Indian women seem to present higher insulin resistance (44,45). Metabolic syndrome in PCOS women seems to be more prevalent in black patients (46); however, this comparison was not performed in our study.…”

“…Distinct features in women with PCOS, insulin resistance and compensatory hyperinsulinemia, lead to hyperandrogenemia due to increased ovarian androgen production and decreased production of sex hormone binding globulin [42,43]. Since hyperinsulinemia has been implicated as a significant cause of anovulation, many investigators hypothesized that a reduction of systemic insulin serum levels would result in an improvement of ovulatory function and overall fecundity in PCOS women.…”

“…There are very few studies on the association of metabolic parameters with subcutaneous fat in patients with PCOS. Moreover, Asian women with PCOS are leaner than those from Western countries, therefore fat distribution may be different compared with Western women . Several investigations in Western countries shows that visceral fat in PCOS patients is higher than in the control group, and that the PCOS group has an android pattern of fat distribution, but there are few studies on Asian women with PCOS.…”
