Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Pathogenesis, Treatment and Secondary Associated Diseases

Abstract: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrinopathy in women of reproductive age. It is characterized by hyperandrogenism, polycystic ovaries, and chronic anovulation along with insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, abdominal obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia as frequent metabolic traits (metabolic syndrome) that culminate in serious long-term consequences such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, endometrial hyperplasia, and coronary artery disease. It is one of the most common causes of anovulat… Show more

“…At the current, testosterone is the most widely recognized estimation in routine clinical practice for the examination of female hyperandrogenism that can be delivered either direct by the ovaries or created by the digestion of its antecedent androstenedione in fat or limited tissues. Disorders in metabolism of lipid and lipoprotein are considered a metabolic abnormality that fairly common in PCOS patients 22 . the present study, the concentration of lipid profile except HDL were higher in all three groups comparison with healthy non-infected covid-19 group.…”

“…The major androgens include dehydroepiandrosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), androstenedione, testosterone, and dihydrotestosterone, with the latter two having the highest affinity for the androgen receptor and the greatest potency. In healthy women, testosterone is largely bound by sex hormone binding globulin and albumin, leaving only approximately 1% freely circulating as bioactive "free testosterone" (8) . The pilosebaceous unit expresses 5a-reductase, which converts testosterone to the highly potent dihydrotestosterone.…”

“… 11 Insulin sensitizers have been suggested as a potential treatment for this illness since insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia have an important role in its pathophysiology. 12 , 13 Consequently, improving insulin resistance with lifestyle changes or by taking a diabetes medication is part of the current PCOS treatment. 14 …”
