Polydopamine-Coated Magnetic Composite Particles with an Enhanced Photothermal Effect

Abstract: Recently, photothermal therapy (PTT) that utilizes photothermal conversion (PTC) agents to ablate cancer under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation has attracted a growing amount of attention because of its excellent therapeutic efficacy and improved target selectivity. Therefore, exploring novel PTC agents with an outstanding photothermal effect is a current research focus. Herein, we reported a polydopamine-coated magnetic composite particle with an enhanced PTC effect, which was synthesized simply through coatin… Show more

“…Then PDA layer is coated on the surface of Fe 3 O 4 cores by the self‐polymerization of dopamine and can be visualized clearly in the TEM image (Figure bii). Considering the influence of PDA layer thickness on the photothermal effect of the composite nanoparticles, Fe 3 O 4 @PDA with a 20 nm thick PDA layer is used (as measured in TEM images). After PDA coating, the hydrodynamic diameter of the particles increases from 176 to 208 nm as measured with dynamic light scattering (DLS, Table S1, Supporting Information).…”

“…[ 15,16 ] By contrast, Fe 3 O 4 is known to shorten the T 2 relaxation, and many efforts have been also devoted on the constructing of PDA–Fe 3 O 4 based T 2 ‐weighted contrast agents. [ 17,18 ] Additionally, noble metals and metal oxides that possesses catalytic activities can be loaded on PDA matrix to achieve improved whole catalytic performance. The PDA functionalization of noble metal nanocatalysts significantly improved their colloidal stability that was critical for maintaining the catalytic activity in solution.…”
