Polyelectrolyte Chondroitin Sulfate Microgels as a Carrier Material for Rosmarinic Acid and Their Antioxidant Ability

Abstract: Polyelectrolyte microgels derived from natural sources such as chondroitin sulfate (CS) possess considerable interest as therapeutic carriers because of their ionic nature and controllable degradation capability in line with the extent of the used crosslinker for long-term drug delivery applications. In this study, chemically crosslinked CS microgels were synthesized in a single step and treated with an ammonia solution to attain polyelectrolyte CS−[NH4]+ microgels via a cation exchange reaction. The spherical… Show more

“…The cytotoxicity analyses of p(Gly) and Q@p(Gly) particles were performed on L929 fibroblast cells according to the literature [ 30 ]. Briefly, the live cells containing 1 × 10 4 cells were placed in a 96-well plate and incubated for 24 h in a 5% CO 2 /95% air atmosphere at 37 °C.…”

“…As for the LBL process, the load of RA should be given priority in the selection of biobased polyelectrolyte pairs. Recently reported local RA delivery systems include chitosan complexes, 29,30 magnetite microspheres, 31 liposome vesicles, 32 electric spray particles, 33 polyelectrolyte microgels, 34 cyclodextrin complexes, 35 etc. Among all, the simplest system of chitosan and rosmarinic acid complex (CS@RA) has attracted extensive attention, and chitosan has been confirmed to load RA through ion interactions between amino and carboxyl groups as well as hydrophobic interactions between helical domains and hydrocarbon chains.…”
