Polyelectrolyte multilayers: preparation and applications

Abstract: The review concerns the results of studies on the synthesis of polyelectrolyte coatings on charged surfaces. These coatings represent nanostructured systems with clearly defined tendency to self-assembly and self-adjustment, which is of particular interest for materials science, biomedicine and pharmacology. A breakthrough in this area of knowledge is due to the development and introduction of a new technique, so-called layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition of nanofilms. The technique is very simple, viz., multilaye… Show more

“…Polyanions comprising sulphonate and sulphate anionic moieties (i.e., PSS, heparin, poly(vinyl sulphonate) salts) yield highly stable PE films through the formation of strong and irreversibly ionically cross-linked pairs [80]. While this makes them the go-to solution for PE membrane synthesis, expansion of polyanion pool enables broader choice for task specific PE implemented in CO 2 capture [71].…”

“…Several reports on strong PE capsules to date show their wide use in many practical applications ranging from the loading and controlled release of therapeutic agents upon minor variations in the environmental characteristics, surface modification and suppression of inter-chain interaction to the degradation/rearrangement of LbL films under the action of physical factors [19,20]. In spite of the fact that weak PE systems can also offer many such advantages, only a few works have been reported.…”

“…Polyelectrolyte (PEL) multilayers (PEMs) were introduced by Decher [1] in the early 1990s and can be used as a simple surface modification technique for planar, curved and even porous substrates based on aqueous systems. Moreover, PEMs have become an interesting topic in colloid and surface science, as comprehensively reviewed both earlier [2,3,4] and more recently [5,6,7,8,9]. PEMs have wide application in biomedicine [10,11,12,13], diagnostics and sensorics [14,15,16], and separation technology [17,18,19,20].…”
