Polyelectrolyte-Promoted Forward Osmosis–Membrane Distillation (FO–MD) Hybrid Process for Dye Wastewater Treatment

Abstract: Polyelectrolytes have proven their advantages as draw solutes in forward osmosis process in terms of high water flux, minimum reverse flux, and ease of recovery. In this work, the concept of a polyelectrolyte-promoted forward osmosis-membrane distillation (FO-MD) hybrid system was demonstrated and applied to recycle the wastewater containing an acid dye. A poly(acrylic acid) sodium (PAA-Na) salt was used as the draw solute of the FO to dehydrate the wastewater, while the MD was employed to reconcentrate the PA… Show more

“…It is also observed that the viscosity of the solution of 0.5 g/mL concentrations is about 5 and 10 times those of 0.3 g/mL and 0.15 g/mL, respectively, probably due to the restricted salt diffusion with the concentration increase. Similar trends were also found in previous works, where polyelectrolytes with large molecular weights can't expand fully at high-concentration due to the limited space [23]. However, the viscosity of STPH solution of a low concentration of 0.5 g/mL is lower than that of most other reported draw solutions [17,[25][26][27], suggesting its great potential as a good draw solute candidate for FO applications.…”

“…It is a common attribute that osmotic pressure is more sensitive to the component change of the draw solution, while the change of water flux could be retarded due to the combined effect of the solute diffusion coefficient, flow rate, diluted concentration polarization, etc. [23].…”

“…Considering the superiority of PAA-Na as draw solutes, they were used for acid dye wastewater treatment via an forward osmosis-membrane distillation (FO-MD) hybrid system. [79] In the FO-MD hybrid process, PAA-Na polyelectrolytes served as the draw solutes in the FO process to dehydrate the dye wastewater, meanwhile, the dilute PAA-Na solutions after FO were simultaneously concentrated through the MD process. With the integration of FO and MD, a continuous dye wastewater treatment process was established.…”

“…A number of physical and physicochemical technologies have been developed for the removal of dyes from aqueous solutions, including adsorption techniques [3,4], membrane processes [5,6], and degradation of dyes through oxidation under the assistant of catalysts [7][8][9][10]. Various materials have been used as adsorbents for the removal of dyes, such as biocoagulants [1], fruit peels [3], and cellulose-based bioadsorbents [4].…”
