Polymer/additive compatibility: study of primary antioxidants in PBD

Abstract: Stabilization of polymers involves chemical and physical processes, and the effectiveness of antioxidants is strongly influenced by their compatibility with the host system. In the case of rubber-modified high-impact polymer blends, the dispersed elastomer phase is generally the most sensitive to thermooxidative degradation. The compatibility of five hindered phenolic antioxidants with polybutadiene (PBD) was studied as a function of temperature. Relationships were found between the diffusion rate and the spec… Show more

“…The thermo-oxidative stability of single-stabilizer systems follows the order: Irganox1076> Irganox245>DLTP. It seems that the more hindered phenol Irganox1076 is more effective than the less hindered phenol Irganox245 for the stability of ABS polymers for the long use which has been reported by Földes [19] and Zweifel [20]. However, the highest efficiency is achieved for the combination of Irganox245/ DLTP in terms of reduction in carbonyl group evolution.…”

“…As a consequence, the stabilization of efficiency decreases [24]. Földes [19,24] studied the compatibility of primary AO with PBD by "sorption techniques" and Flory-Huggins free volume theory. The result showed that Irganox1076 had higher activation energies of diffusion and solubility than Irganox245; the solubility of Irganox245 was only 1.3 w$w -1 % at 50°C, while 71.5 w$w -1 % for Irganox1076.…”

“…Typical D values of stabilizers in polyolefins are much higher [1,16]. As is the case of the D of Irganox Ò 1098 in polybutadiene (PBD) [13,14] (See Fig. 5).…”

“…Its diffusion in polybutadiene (PBD) was studied [13,14], but to the best of our knowledge not in PA6. In this paper the solubilities and diffusion coefficients of Irganox Ò 1098 in PA6 as a function of temperature (between 139 and 180 C) are described using the above mentioned stack method.…”
