Polymer and Silica Supported Tridentate Schiff Base Vanadium Catalysts for the Asymmetric Oxidation of Ethyl Mandelate – Activity, Stability and Recyclability

Abstract: Homogeneous tridentate Schiff base vanadium catalysts derived from salicylaldehydes and tert-leucinol or tert-leucine are known to be excellent catalysts for the asymmetric oxidation of a-hydroxy esters including ethyl mandelate. Herein, new analogous supported, semi-soluble and insoluble catalysts are synthesized and their activities relative to the homogeneous catalyst are reported. The new catalysts are characterized by 1 H and 13

“…In the FT‐IR spectra from 3300 to 3600 cm −1 region, we can observed a peak intensity difference between Schiff base ligand and vanadium complex which may confirm the coordination of vanadium metal ion to the ligand through the carboxylic –OH group. Again, a weak peak observed at 980 cm −1 due to V=O bond stretching vibration …”

“…Peak at 1396 cm -1 may be due to P-O stretching vibration 39 . Peak at 970 cm -1 is due to stretching vibration of V=O in the infrared spectrum 40 . The band at 436 cm -1 arises due to P-O bending vibrations.…”

“…Its good catalytic activity, as well as its interesting sorption, optical, electrochemical and magnetic properties, are well documented in the literature 1 . Since the discovery of vanadate-25 dependent enzymes from various algae 2 and terrestrial fungi 3 , the coordination chemistry of this element has received increasing interest.…”
