Polymer Composite Optically Integrated Lab on Chip for the Detection of Ammonia

Abstract: This paper reports a novel method to detect ammonia by using the ninhydrin -PDMS composite. The polymer composite film is prepared by integrating ninhydrin into the PDMS polymer matrix. Further, an optical lab-on-a-chip device is developed by integrating the ninhydrin-polymer composite into a microfluidic device for the detection of ammonia. The chemisorption of ammonia onto the composite resulted in the change in its optical absorption property. The proposed device has an integrated light emitting diode and p… Show more

“…There are many toxic gases that exist in the environment such as CO, SO 2 , CO 2 , NO, NH 3 , and SO 3 , which are produced by motorized transportations, power plants, industries, biological waste etc. [1][2][3][4][5] CO gas is extremely toxic, which is emitted from the burning of fossil fuel, natural gas, and organic matter. It is responsible for several respiratory diseases such as asthma, inammatory lung disease, and hypoxia.…”

“…Ammonium hydroxide volatilizes ammonia at room temperature, which is harmful to health and environments, as exposure to ammonia may cause potential hazards to humans, such as irritation in the respiratory tract or suffocation. 26 In addition, as it deprotonates water and makes the solution basic, ammonium hydroxide results in damage to the civil structure when it induces a corrosion reaction on metals enclosed in the structure, 27 thus, it is essential to detect ammonium hydroxide for health and environmental control. Traditionally, the detection of ammonium hydroxide is used by capacitanceand resistive-type sensors, which measure changes due to the variance of medium dielectric constant and electrical resistivity, respectively.…”

“…Ammonium hydroxide (NH 4 OH) is important in industrial applications, such as fertilizers, coolants, and fermentation. Ammonium hydroxide volatilizes ammonia at room temperature, which is harmful to health and environments, as exposure to ammonia may cause potential hazards to humans, such as irritation in the respiratory tract or suffocation . In addition, as it deprotonates water and makes the solution basic, ammonium hydroxide results in damage to the civil structure when it induces a corrosion reaction on metals enclosed in the structure, thus, it is essential to detect ammonium hydroxide for health and environmental control.…”

“…The reaction of ninhydrin with glycine was slow, accelerated by heating; a slight change of film color to blue was noticed. A change of absorbance peak was also observed, depending on the substrate: 420-480 nm for ammonia and 570 nm for amino acid [66].…”
