Polymer Geogrids: A Review of Material, Design and Structure Relationships

Abstract: Geogrids are a class of geosynthetic materials made of polymer materials with widespread transportation, infrastructure, and structural applications. Geogrids are now routinely used in soil stabilization applications ranging from reinforcing walls to soil reinforcement below grade or embankments with increased potential for remote-sensing applications. Developments in manufacturing procedures have allowed new geogrid designs to be fabricated in various forms of uniaxial, biaxial, and triaxial configurations. T… Show more

“…The resistance of the geotextile to tensile loads generated in the soil occurs at sufficiently small strains to prevent excessive movement of the reinforced soil structure. The polymers used in these applications should have resistance to degradation by the soil and altering in these properties with time (i.e., creep behavior) must be insignificant [85,86].…”

“…Slit film, flat-tape fabrics are usually PP materials, which are quite strong but have relatively poor permeability. On the other hand, fabrics from fibrillated tape yarns have better permeability and more uniform interstice openings than flat-tape products [85,89]. 3.4.…”

“…The design of geogrids incorporates strategically positioned empty spaces between the polymer strips, facilitating their integration with soil, stone, and other geotechnical materials. This integration enhances the composite material's resistance, making geogrids a valuable asset [5]. In recent years, there has been a notable surge in studies focusing on geogrids and trench-related research.…”

“…Geosynthetics have emerged among sustainable and cost-effective construction materials [5]. Some of the most widely used forms of geosynthetics in terms of flexible pavement are geotextiles, geogrids, geocomposites, geocells, geonets, geofoams, and geobags [6][7][8]. They perform one or more of the following functions: separation, sealing lateral drainage, filtration, and reinforcement [9,10].…”
