A number of different metallic nanoparticles have been extensively investigated in recent years based on their diverse potential in biomedical and cancer applications, antibacterial activity, and chemical properties. Here, silver nitroprusside nanoparticles (AgNPs) were prepared from silver nitrate and sodium nitroprusside, and their anticancer activity was evaluated. AgNPs were prepared and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (DRX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray dispersive energy spectroscopy (EDX), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In vitro tests were performed using two breast cancer cell lines, including a non-malignant breast epithelial cell line (MCF-10A) and a breast cancer cell line (MCF-7). The results obtained through cytotoxicity assays (MTT and resazurin) and bright-field microscopy revealed that AgNPs (3.0 mg/mL) exhibited specific selectivity for non-malignant breast epithelial cells. They were toxic to tumorigenic cells (MCF-7) with a lower selective toxicity to non-malignant breast epithelial cells (MCF-10A). In vivo imaging system (IVIS) imaging demonstrated the antitumor activity of AgNPs (3.0 mg/mL) compared to that of the control, and this was confirmed through histological analysis without any potential systemic toxicity. These results suggest that AgNPs possess potential anticancer applications in breast cancer treatment.

Polymeric nano‐ and microscale materials bear significant potential in manifold applications related to biomedicine. This is owed not only to the large chemical diversity of the constituent polymers, but also to the various morphologies these materials can achieve, ranging from simple particles to intricate self‐assembled structures. Modern synthetic polymer chemistry permits the tuning of many physicochemical parameters affecting the behavior of polymeric nano‐ and microscale materials in the biological context. In this Perspective, an overview of the synthetic principles underlying the modern preparation of these materials is provided, aiming to demonstrate how advances in and ingenious implementations of polymer chemistry fuel a range of applications, both present and prospective.

Characterisation of Drug Nanocarriers

Polymers are the backbone of pharmaceutical nanotechnology allowing for a broad range of biomedical applications, especially in the development of novel drug delivery systems. This chapter focuses on polymeric nanocapsules, which are nanovesicular structures comprised of a polymeric shell surrounding a hollow, liquid, or solid core. The composition of the shell and the core dictate their biocompatibility and bioavailability as well as their potential to encapsulate and release drugs with different physicochemical characteristics. The different types of stimuli-responsive polymers, and the implemented synthetic procedures of polymeric nanocapsules, are thoroughly discussed, followed by an extensive analysis of evaluation methodologies for their efficiency as drug delivery systems in terms of characterization techniques and biological assessment protocols. The current and potential bioapplications of polymer-based nanocapsules in cancer and other pathologies treatment and imaging are presented.
