Polymerization of itaconic acid initiated by a potassium persulfate/N,N‐dimethylethanolamine system

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The synthesis and characterization of poly (itaconic acid) (PIA) with a novel initiator/activator system is presented. The initiator in this system was potassium persulfate, whereas the activator was N,Ndimethylethanolamine (DMEA). PIA was synthesized in distilled water and in 0.1M HCl at 40 C with reaction times of 72 and 96 h. PIA was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, gel permeation chromatography, and pulse gradient spin echo-NMR and compared to the same polymer synthesized in di… Show more

“…According to the producer data, its molecular weight is 100 000-300 000 g/mol, degree of deacetylation 80 %. Poly(itaconic acid) (PIA) was prepared in our laboratory by polymerization of aqueous solution of itaconic acid in 0.1 M HCl (Molar mass of the obtained PIA, measured by limiting viscosity number was M v ¼ 48 kDa) by our previously reported procedure (Velickovic et al 2008). Reactive Orange 16 (also known as Remazol Brilliant Orange 3R, or Bezactiv Orange V-3R) was a gift from Bezema AG and was used as received.…”

“…In temperature range from 155-228°C two closed peak on PIA thermogram can be observed. The first one is assigned to the formation of poly(anhydride) with evaporation of water and reaches maximum at 183°C, while the second one is assigned to the decarboxylation and reaches maximum at 208°C [15].…”
