Polymerization of styrenes and acrylates carrying dendrons of the first and second generation

Abstract: The synthesis of dendronized acrylate and styrene monomers with Frechet-type as well as urethane-based dendrons ofthe first and second generation and their radically initiated polymerization to the high molecular weight dendrimers 6(G-1,2) and 8 a(G-2) is reported. The latter polymer carries four THP-protected hydroxy fhctions per repeat unit whose quantitative deprotection is also described.

“…The core could be subsequently disrupted to provide three linear polymer chains. This type of approach and related approaches such as FrØchet and co-workers' dendri-graft polymers [91] and dendritic initiators for living free radical polymerization [92,93] and Schlüter and co-workers' dendritic monomers [94] have obvious extensions in the preparation of, for example, metallodendrimer polyfunctional polymerization initiators. One can envision a number of interesting, hybrid molecular topologies from such an approach.…”

“…Fre  chet-type dendrons [19] are drawn in an abbreviated form, which is explained in Figure 3. The monomers are polymerized by radical polymerization (2, [5b, 20] 3, [21] 4, [22] 5, [23] 6, [24] 7, [25,26] 8, [27] 9, [28] 10, [24] 11, [29] and 12, [30] ), insertion polymerization (13 [31] ), ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) [32] (14 [33,34] ), Suzuki polycondensation (SPC) [35] with 17 (15 [36] and 16 [37] ) and 23 (20, [38] 21, [39] and 22 [39] ), polyaddition with 19 under polyurethane formation (18 [40] ), and Heck coupling of 24 with 25.…”
