Polymerization shrinkage behaviour of resin composites functionalized with unsilanized bioactive glass fillers

Abstract: Previous work has shown that partial replacement of reinforcing fillers with unsilanized silica particles can diminish polymerization shrinkage stress of dental resin composites. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether such an effect can be attained by using unsilanized bioactive glass (BG). Incorporating BG fillers into resin composites is interesting due to their potential for exerting caries-preventive effects. Experimental light-curable composites with a total filler load of 77 wt% were pre… Show more

“…Past studies have also shown a direct correlation of shrinkage volume and shrinkage stress 48,49 and similar relationship is observed in the current study. It is known that shrinkage stress and shrinkage volume are directionally proportional to the material elastic modulus 50,51 , which is observed in the current study. The flexure moduli for the three groups are: 5.29, 6.47 and 6.17 GPa 9 , measured shrinkage volume is 2.84%, 3.08% and 3.05% and shrinkage stress of 0.59 MPa, 0.9 MPa and 0.81 MPa respectively, which correlates with the earlier studies \ 50,51 .…”

“…This in vitro study builds on a series of previous studies that investigated experimental BG-functionalized composites regarding their acid-neutralizing effects 32 , shrinkage properties 33 , ion release 23 , and anti-demineralizing protective effects on enamel 21 and dentin 22 . The present study addressed the potential of adhesive coating for hindering the reactivity of the experimental BG-containing composites and selected commercial ion-releasing restorative materials.…”

“…A series of previous studies on experimental composites functionalized with BG 45S5 have evaluated their DC at a single time point after light-curing, namely 15 min 22 or 24 h 17 19 , while one study additionally evaluated polymerization kinetics 20 . The present work complements these studies by introducing a series of composites functionalized with a customized low-Na F-containing BG 21 , 23 .…”

“…As a potential alternative for BG 45S5, a customized low-Na F-containing BG has been developed which is characterized by better stability and capability to release fluoride 21 23 . A series of studies have shown its favourable properties, namely acid neutralization and hydroxyapatite precipitation 21 , favourable curing properties 22 , and protective effect on enamel 23 .…”
