Polymers in Matrix Type Transdermal Patch

Abstract: Transdermal drug delivery is the administration of therapeutic agents through intact skin for systemic effect. Polymers are the backbone of the matrix-type transdermal patches. Based on the nature of origin, these polymers can be Natural, Semi-synthetic, and Synthetic polymers. Several experimental results have revealed the fact that in the case of the fabrication of matrix-type patches, the use of a polymeric blend becomes more effective than the use of a single polymer to control the rate of drug release fro… Show more

“…Penggunaan campuran polimer HPMC dan etil selulosa bertujuan agar menghasilkan sediaan transdermal patch yang lebih kuat dan fleksibel [9]. Selain itu, penggunaan campuran polimer lebih efektif daripada penggunaan polimer tunggal dalam mengontrol laju pelepasan obat dari patch [10]. Pembuatan transdermal patch dilakukan dengan cara polimer HPMC dan etil selulosa dicampurkan hingga homogen [11].…”

“…These patches are designed to be applied to the skin while delivering a therapeutically effective dose of one or more active ingredients into the systemic circulation through the layers of the skin [ 4 , 5 , 6 ]. The most basic and important components of transdermal patches are the polymers as they provide numerous functions such as forming the matrix, controlling the rate of drug delivery, providing protection, adhesion, flexibility and permeation [ 1 , 7 , 8 , 9 ].…”

“…These matrices can be formulated by the dispersion of an active pharmaceutical ingredient in a solid state or liquid polymer base [ 1 , 7 ]. An ideal polymer should meet some requirements such as proper stability and good compatibility with the chemical agent and the other elements that were used; moreover, they should contribute to a predictable drug release [ 10 ].…”
