Polymorphisms of Fcγ-receptors RIIa, RIIIa, and RIIIb in patients with adult periodontal diseases

Abstract: Polymorphisms influencing the binding affinity between the Fcgamma receptors and IgG of different subclasses are thought to be of importance in the individual susceptibility to infections with Gram-negative bacteria contributing to periodontal disease. One hundred and fifty-four Caucasian subjects were clinically and radiographically examined for their periodontal status and genotyped for their allelic pattern of FcgammaRIIa, FcgammaRIIIa, and FcgammaIIIb polymorphism. In assessing periodontitis according to m… Show more

“…41,42 However, whereas in the other studies, these results were referable to LD, in the present analysis when the frequencies of the combined genotypes FCGR2A*C and FCGR3B* C were evaluated, the statistical analysis indicated an increased effect on the disease susceptibility for the combined genotype (w 2 ¼ 8,656; P ¼ 0.0033). This effect does not seem to be a consequence of LD, as the two markers of the Fc-g receptors are in complete equilibrium (D 0 ¼ 0.108; r 2 ¼ 0.0) in our sample.…”

“…Several studies have found associations of FCGR2A polymorphisms with susceptibility to meningococcal disease, 23 periodontal disease 24 recurrent bacterial respiratory tract infection in children with low IgG2 anticarbohydrate antibodies 25 bacteremic pneumococcal pneumonia, 26 and invasive pneumococcal infections in patients with SLE. 27 The FCGR2A 131 H/R SNP strongly influences the ability of the receptor to bind human IgG 2 , the isotype often made in response to encapsulated bacteria.…”

“…Kobayashi et al (2001) reported that 2 Fc␥RIII alleles may be associated with severity of chronic periodontitis in a Japanese population. Meisel et al (2001) analyzed the association between Fc␥RIIIa (high-affinity receptor) and Fc␥RIIIb (low-affinity receptor) and chronic periodontitis (CP). They found that Fc␥RIIIa was associated with CP (OR 5.3, 95% CI 1.4-26.2) but that this is in linkage disequilibrium with Fc␥RIIIb, which is also associated with CP.…”
