Polymorphonuclear leukocytes released from the bone marrow by granulocyte colony-stimulating factor: intravascular behavior

Abstract: We conclude that PMN released from the bone marrow by G-CSF sequestered less in the lung microvessels and have a prolonged intravascular life span.

“…Nevertheless, it is well known rHuG-CSF decreases maturation times for postmitotic cells and stimulates mitosis and mobilization of band cells and segmented neutrophils in bone marrow (33,41,56), which, therapeutically, translates in shortening the duration of neutropenia Grade 4 (9). Actually, rHuG-CSF decreased the MTT by 92%, while increased the mitotic activity by 120%, which is consistent with the reported values presented recently (36,45) and the slight trend evidenced in the deterministic simulations (Fig.…”

“…interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8 and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (GC-SF), are elevated during acute community-acquired pneumonia [30]. Several of these inflammatory mediators, generated locally and translocated systemically during acute and chronic airways inflammation, constitute critical mediators (granulocyte-macrophage colonystimulating factor, GC-SF, macrophage colony-stimulating factor, IL-5 to IL-8, IL-12 and macrophage inflammatory protein-1a) in the release, trafficking and differentiation of BMSC [31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38] (fig. 1).…”

“…This appears to reflect initial margination of neutrophils to the surface of endothelial cells of blood vessels, followed by emigration from the marginated pool (demargination) and increased mobilization of band cells and segmented neutrophils from bone marrow to peripheral blood [22,23,24]. …”
