Polynomial Functors and Shannon Entropy

Abstract: Past work shows that one can associate a notion of Shannon entropy to a Dirichlet polynomial, regarded as an empirical distribution. Indeed, entropy can be extracted from any d ∈ Dir by a twostep process, where the first step is a rig homomorphism out of Dir, the set of Dirichlet polynomials, with rig structure given by standard addition and multiplication. In this short note, we show that this rig homomorphism can be upgraded to a rig functor, when we replace the set of Dirichlet polynomials by the category o… Show more

“…We do not pretend to give a detailed mathematical exposition of either of these concepts here and instead refer the interested reader to [46] on polynomial interaction and [47] on the basic ideas of sheaf theory. For our purposes, it will be sufficient to know some basic concepts from set theory (the notions of disjoint union and intersection) and the basic definitions of category and functor, which we now review.…”

“…A possible avenue from a category-theoretical point of view might be to combine the theory developed so far with ideas from functorial manifold learning and clustering as investigated in [Shiebler, 2020b] and [Shiebler, 2020a]. Furthermore, it might be helpful to include the stochastic gradient descent procedure as well into the category-theoretical formulation, as initiated in [Fong et al, 2019] and [Spivak, 2022] (which in turn was building up on [Spivak and Niu, 2023]).…”
