Polyphenol Contents, Antioxidant and Antibacterial Activities of Aqueous Algerian Propolis Extracts

Abstract: The propolis, an extremely complex resinous material, exhibits valuable pharmacological and biological properties, mainly attributed to the presence of polyphenols. The composition of propolis depends on time, vegetation, and the area of collection. Total flavonoid and polyphenol contents of aqueous extracts of propolis samples from different areas of Algeria, determined by using aluminum chloride and Folin–Ciocalteu colorimetric methods, were in the range of 3.047 ± 0.004–5.273 ± 0.013 mg/g and 96.833 ± 0.027… Show more

“…In addition, these values are lower than ours [29]. On the other hand, aqueous extracts of propolis from Algeria have a total phenol content of 9688.3 to 45,883.3 mg EGA/100 g, the variation was mainly due to the place of origin of the propolis [30]. On the other hand, there are various methods for the purification of extracts, which can influence the content of bioactive compounds.…”

“…500 mg EQ/100 g). Various investigations report a total flavonoid content of 3823 to 4745 mg EQ/100 g [31]; 304.7 to 527.3 mg EQ/100 g [30]; 16,622 to 51,977 mg EQ/100 g [27]; 1100 to 15,000 mg EQ/100 g [7]; 4946.5 mg EQ/100 g [33]; and 55,758 mg EQ/100 g [26]. As we can see, the flavonoids' content is highly variable; therefore, biological activity could vary.…”

“…Pretreatment and continuous treatment of propolis extract in NIH/3T3 cell cultures showed an impressive inhibition of malignant cell transformation by Moloney murine Sarcoma Virus (MuSV) (Huleihel and Ishano, 2001). The antiviral and the anti proliferative activities of the extract of propolis could be attributed to its contents in flavonoids (3,047 ± 0,004 mg/g), polyphenols (221 ± 0,001 mg/g), and its four identified derivatives of cinnamic acid (Soltani, 2017;Soltani et al, 2021). Cinnamaldehyde a derivative of cinnamic acid has been reported as an inducer of apoptosis on various cancer cell lines in vitro, that transduced the apoptotic signal via reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation (Ka et al, 2003;Li et al, 2016) In the presence of Vibrio harveyi BB120, with and without the addition of the extract Artemia survives differently.…”
