Polyphenol Mechanisms against Gastric Cancer and Their Interactions with Gut Microbiota: A Review

Abstract: The lack of new drugs and resistance to existing drugs are serious problems in gastric cancer(GC) treatment. The research found polyphenols possess anti-Helicobacter pylori(Hp) and antitumor activities and may be used in the research and development of drugs for cancer prevention and treatment. However, polyphenols are affected by their chemical structures and physical properties, which leads to relatively low bioavailability and bioactivity in vivo. The intestinal flora can improve the absorption, utilization… Show more

“…Moreover, polyphenols have a synergistic action with existing anticancer drugs, potentiating their therapeutic activity [ 110 , 111 ] and reducing cell resistance to drugs [ 112 ]. Due to their properties, plant phytochemicals can be used as adjunctive therapy, reducing the side effects [ 113 , 114 ] of drugs, chemotherapy or radiotherapy [ 115 ].…”

“…There are four main types of cleft rings in the colon: (i) flavones and flavanones to form C6-C3 phenolic acids; (ii) flavonols to form C6-C2 phenolic acids; (iii) flavanols to form C6-C3 phenols; (iv) isoflavones to form derivatives of ethylphenols [ 99 , 100 ]. Flavonoid–microbiome interactions may also prove helpful in the treatment of different diseases [ 100 , 101 , 102 , 103 , 104 ]. Rapid metabolic elimination of flavonoids highlights the need to develop novel pathways to improve their delivery.…”

“…Epidemiological research suggests that a polyphenol-rich diet protects against tumors, inhibiting proliferation, inducing apoptosis, and reducing drug resistance in gastric cancer cells [80]. The role of phytochemicals has been associated with the modulation of different signaling cascades of the cell division process, which, in turn, is related to the induction of apoptosis, suppression of epithelial to mesenchymal transition, and subsequent metastatic behavior of cancer cells.…”
