Polytetrafluoroethylene Giant Granuloma and Adenopathy: Long-Term Complications Following Subureteral Polytetrafluoroethylene Injection for the Treatment of Vesicoureteral Reflux in Children

Abstract: Many experimental studies and some clinical observations have demonstrated that polytetrafluoroethylene particles elicit a foreign body granulomatous reaction and have the tendency to migrate. Until the long-term effects of their presence are well known, STING should be carefully evaluated in children and young patients.

“…PTFE paste injection resulted in particle migration to distant organs, such as the lungs and brain. [22][23][24][25] Although collagen is not likely to migrate, collagen did not conserve the initial volume 26,27 and sometimes caused allergic reactions or viral infections. 28 Silicone has been reported to have severe complications, such as chronic inflammation or migration.…”

“…The organs of the microsphere-implanted mice, including the liver, brain, heart, spleen, kidneys, and lungs, were also harvested and examined histologically to determine microsphere migration to the distant organs. Figure 1) in a CMC solution were injected through various gauges (18,20,24, and 26-gauge) of needles to determine whether the microspheres were injectable without morphological deformation. The microspheres were injected easily through all types of the gauge needles and showed no tendency to obstruct the needles.…”

“…PTFE paste injection resulted in particle migration to distant organs, such as lungs and brain. [17][18][19][20] Since PTFE particles are nonbiodegradable, concerns about chronic side effects have been raised. Furthermore, particles that spread to distant organs cannot be removed by a simple operation.…”
