Polyurea Microcapsules from Oil-in-Oil Emulsions via Interfacial Polymerization

Abstract: Polyurea microcapsules were obtained via interfacial polymerization at the interface of methanol-in-cyclohexane, formamide-in-cyclohexane, and N,N-dimethylformamide-in-cyclohexane emulsions. Coumarin-1 was used as a model encapsulant; both dye leaching and encapsulation efficiency were examined. For the methanol-in-cyclohexane system, design of experiments was used to assess the influence of five different variables on capsule size. A model was obtained that accurately predicts the size of capsules resulting f… Show more

“…These assembles are typically not robust (for example, vesicles that cannot be dried) or more importantly rely on covalent crosslinking to give a microcapsule structure, limiting the opportunities for controlled disassembly required for on-demand release of cargo. While there have been examples of microcapsules formed from interfacial polymerization 30,31 or crosslinking 32 of monomers at the interface of a microdroplet, the interfacial assembly of preformed polymeric materials to form multi-layer amphiphilic microcapsules has not yet been demonstrated. Supramolecular host-guest chemistry has been applied in the preparation of various self-assembled structures, including polymers 33,34 , micelles 35 , hydrogels 36,37 , colloids 38 and more recently by our group, microcapsules 39 .…”

“…Organic-inorganic hybrid hollow silica nanospheres [5] and hollow mesoporous silica nanoworms [6] were synthesized using a chiral cationic low-molecular-weight amphiphile as template. The formation of O/W emulsion is reasonable because the P123 micelles with n-decane solubilized inside as swelling agent can transform to emulsion droplets while excess amount of n-decane is used in the synthesis of hexagonally ordered materials [23][24][25][26][27]. In the synthesis process in current work, the residual water-rich layer is initially turbid right after the removal of decane-rich layer at room temperature but becomes clear and stable while its temperature was increased to 40°C.…”

“…1. Then, we can know that these onion-like silica spheres, with some parallel mesoporous tubes along their edge, are related to initial patterns of the cocoon-like pouches containing the wall constructed by hexagonally ordered channels [22][23][24][25][26][27]. Under static condition without stirring, the aggregation of the onion-like silica spheres is absent or proceeds very slowly and thus the hexagonally ordered structure can not be built [22].…”

“…Después de encontrar la mejor relación entre las variables, se realiza la optimización del tamaño de partícula evaluando como factores la cantidad de agente emulsificante O/W (alcohol polivinilico) y de fase dispersa, basado en trabajos anteriores [18][19] . Los valores obtenidos para los experimentos y sus propiedades se describen en la Tabla 3.…”
