Polyureas Versatile Polymers for New Academic and Technological Applications

Abstract: Polyureas (PURs) are a competitive polymer to their analogs, polyurethanes (PUs). Whereas PUs’ main functional group is carbamate (urethane), PURs contain urea. In this revision, a comprehensive overview of PUR properties, from synthesis to technical applications, is displayed. Preparative routes that can be used to obtain PURs using diisocianates or harmless reagents such as CO2 and NH3 are explained, and aterials, urea monomers and PURs are discussed; PUR copolymers are included in this discussion as well. “…Alongside making the previously mentioned linear NIPUs, Deepa et al conducted the polyaddition of dicarbamates with diamines to produce linear PUas, and Koning and co-workers employed a non-metal TBD catalyst to prepare similar materials. 1372,1392 An excellent review on the current state of polyurea research was recently published by Santana et al 1393 The work of Shi et al and other similar works have highlighted the exceptional potential for the catalyst-free preparation of bio-based NIPUas directly from a diamine and CO 2 , requiring only elevated temperatures and pressurized CO 2 . 1373 Here, the potential for bio-based NIPUas is believed to further expand as additional bio-based diamines are developed and commercialized.…”

“…As mentioned, one such method is the production of dicarbamates from the reaction of bifunctional cyclic carbonates, and the subsequent reaction with a diamine. “…[22] 14CHDO is also the prime industrial precursor to 1,4-cyclohexanedione [23] a highly versatile platform molecule to the production of pharmaceuticals such as the analgesic Cebranopadol. [24][25] The prime application of diamines such as 14CHDA is for the preparation of polyamides, [26][27] polyimides, [28] polyureas [29] , polyurethanes [30] and biologically active compounds (Figure 1A). [31][32] Industrially 14CHDO and 14CHDA are produced from fossil resources, relying on the use of benzene, a carcinogenic and mutagenic compound with a lengthy hazard classification by several strategies that are briefly summarized on (Figure 1B) and on Supplementary Note 1 in more details.…”
