Ponticoccus litoralis gen. nov., sp. nov., a marine bacterium in the family Rhodobacteraceae

Abstract: A Gram-negative, coccoid to rod-shaped, strictly aerobic bacterium, strain CL-GR66 T , was isolated from coastal seawater collected off Korea. The strain grew optimally in the presence of 3-5 % sea salts, at a temperature of 30 6C and at pH 7. The polar lipid profile of strain CL-GR66T comprised phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids, an unidentified glycolipid and an unidentified lipid. The major fatty acids were C 18 : 1 v7c (71.4 %), 11-methyl C 18 … Show more

“…Its metabolites had growth inhibition effects not only on its host ( P. donghaiense ), but also on two other red tide microalgae, P. globosa and A. tamarense . Ponticoccus was first isolated from the coastal seawaters of Korea and has been identified as a new genus belonging to Rosebacter clade (Hwang and Cho 2008). The Rosebacter clade is one of the major marine groups and has members across diverse marine habitats (Buchan et al 2005).…”

“…The genera Ponticoccus and Ruegeria are marine bacteria isolated from coastal marine waters and sediments (Brinkhoff et al, 2008;Hwang and Cho, 2008). They belong to the Roseobacter clade of Rhodobacteraceae family (Alphaproteobacteria) that is known to be associated to high organic content environments.…”

“…Many novel genera and species of this clade have been described recently, for example Oceanicola (Cho & Giovannoni, 2004), Thalassobacter (Macián et al, 2005a), Dinoroseobacter (Biebl et al, 2005), Yangia (Dai et al, 2006), Wenxinia (Ying et al, 2007), Ponticoccus (Hwang & Cho, 2008), Tropicibacter (Harwati et al, 2009) and Nautella (Vandecandelaere et al, 2009). The abundance and diverse physiological characteristics within this group suggest that they play important roles in marine ecosystems, such as the degradation of aromatic compounds (Buchan et al, 2001(Buchan et al, , 2005 and the biogeochemical cycles of carbon and sulfur (Buchan et al, 2005;Wagner-Döbler & Biebl, 2006).…”
