Poor oral health status and short‐term outcome of kidney transplantation

Abstract: Aims This study aims to know whether poor oral health increases the risk of acute rejection and hospitalization in kidney allograft recipients. Methods and results This is a prospective cohort study. The same dentist followed participants for 2 months after renal transplant for monitoring oral health (clinical evaluation, DTMF index, and CPITN index), signs of graft rejection, infection, and hospitalization. We compiled rates and reasons for hospital readmission or extended hospital stay. The CPITN had a mean … Show more

“…ESRD patients may be waiting for a kidney transplant. Potential transplant candidates should be free of inflammation before they can receive a transplant, in order to avoid infectious complications when on anti-inflammatory drugs after transplantation (Sarmento et al, 2020). Since periodontal inflammation and/or dental caries in ESRD patients are common, and low salivary flow may predispose to the rapid progression of these diseases later, a careful examination of the oral cavity and treatment of oral problems before transplantation may be part of the pretransplant procedure.…”

“…Therefore, the diagnosis and prophylactic treatment of existing infections, like destroyed teeth and residual roots prior to organ transplantation and drug-induced immunosuppression, are essential. In this context, studies underline that immunosuppressed patients are at greater risk of developing systemic infections leading to hospitalization [6] or even organ rejection relating to odontogenic infection [7]. Oral rehabilitation prior to kidney transplantation is therefore imperative.…”
