Poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma arising from a cervical bronchial cyst

Abstract: Bronchogenic cysts with malignant change are rarely reported. We describe a case of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma arising from a cervical bronchial cyst in a patient presenting with a thyroid mass, cervical lymphadenopathy, and initial biopsy suggestive of papillary thyroid carcinoma. The clinical presentation, intraoperative findings, radiographic images, and pathology slides are presented. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma arising from a bronchial cys… Show more

“…Tanita et al [10] have reported development of malignant melanoma from a cutaneous bronchogenic cyst over scapular region. Calzada et al [11] mentioned about a case of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma arising from a bronchogenic cyst and Jakapovic et al [12] reported transformation of bronchogenic cyst into large cell carcinoma.…”

“…[2,4] Under cutaneous location, most common site is the suprasternal notch, followed by presternal area, neck and scapula. [5] Case report An 11 year old male child presented to the outpatient department with a swelling over manubrium sterni since birth. The swelling was initially smaller in size and in the past few months has progressed to its present size.…”

“…Mucoepidermoid carcinomas arising from bronchogenic cysts have been reported in the thymus of a 59-year-old Japanese woman [20] and in the thyroid of a 44-year-old woman [21]. In addition, a recurrent malignant melanoma arising from a cutaneous bronchogenic cyst in the left scapular area has been reported in a 46-year-old Japanese man [22], and a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma arising from a bronchogenic cyst in the cervical region was recently described [23]. Although cervical bronchogenic cysts are rare and benign, they should be distinguished from other cystic cervical masses, especially metastatic cervical lymph nodes associated with thyroid cancer.…”

“…This disease is very rarely found in adults: only 23 cases have so far been reported in the literature. [1][2][3][4][5] Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and CT, particularly multislice, scans are essential for diagnosis. Differential diagnosis should be made between cervical bronchogenic cyst and branchial cleft, thyroglossal, thymic, thyroid and enteric duplication cysts, lymphangiomas, dermoid cysts, teratomas and neuromas with the same topography.…”

“…1 Once diagnosis has been confirmed and any possible inflammation or sepsis have been treated, the treatment of choice is surgery. Choice of the surgical approach is wholly dependent on the topography and size of the cyst, and it is essential to remove the entire cyst in order to confirm the diagnosis, rule out neoplastic proliferation, 4 …”
